Some Important Alcoholism Facts
Here are some of the basic alcoholism facts when it comes to recovery from the disease:
* Drug rehab will give you an edge in beating alcoholism, but it is not a magic bullet. In fact most will fail after leaving treatment within the first few months.
* Most alcoholics are not skid row bums, but instead are real people who have real jobs and simply lose control of their drinking over time.
* Alcoholics Anonymous can help, but again, it is not a magic bullet either. Most people who go to AA end up dropping out of the program and do not return to it. That said, it does help a lot of people, and should probably be your first line of defense if you are trying to get sober for the first time.
* Alcoholism is not the same thing as a drinking problem. Some people simply drink too much after they have started drinking, but they have no problem abstaining from alcohol and they do not have serious problems when they are sober. A true alcoholic will not function incredibly well when they are not drinking and are simply "dry." That is why recovery programs exist: to give alcoholics structure and purpose in their life so that they do not go crazy while they are sober and end up relapsing.
* If you fail a sobriety test every other weekend then it is time to take a look at your level of denial. Most people who are having these kinds of problems will admit that they are either alcoholic or that they drink like one, but the real way to move past denial is to firmly accept that you cannot drink like regular people and agree to get help for your problem. Without this level of acceptance, no real change can happen.
