Why Are Batman LEGO products So Expensive?
The two most important factors contributing to the extraordinarily high prices on Batman LEGO products are licensing and production. Also, the LEGO Batman figures are very popular. Licensing from DC Comics is generally fairly expensive, and The LEGO Group's royalty payments to licensees, including Warner Bros., have increased dramatically over the years. Naturally, The LEGO Group passes these costs on to consumers.
From the appearance of the first LEGO Batman sets in 2006, the trend has been for sets to remain in production for about a year. After that, they simply go out of stock and stay out of stock. Not long after the 2008 release of the LEGO Batman video game, production has ceased on all LEGO Batman sets, and it does not appear that The LEGO Group will release any new sets or reissue any of the previous sets.
These factors are, of course, interrelated. Because it is so difficult to ensure the profitability of its licensed products, The LEGO Group is understandably reluctant to keep its Batman sets in production. Although LEGO enthusiasts may be willing to purchase these collectible products for hundreds of dollars apiece, parents often balk at such prohibitive prices. However, if The LEGO Group cannot afford the costs of production and licensing without maintaining those prices, discontinuation of the Batman LEGO sets may be the only option.
Rumors to the effect that The LEGO Group actually lost its license – or, perhaps, dropped it – may help explain why the company has no plans to produce any more Batman sets despite the popularity of the video game and, of course, Christopher Nolan's latest Batman film, The Dark Knight. The LEGO Group has remained silent on this point, refusing to discuss any future plans regarding licensed themes. Whatever the case may be, we can expect the prices on Batman LEGO sets to continue to rise.
