Buying Shares: The Long Term Outlook Of Stock Investing
When establishing which direction our investments should go, one of the things we need to consider is the rate of return we will get for the vehicle we choose to make our journey in. Another consideration is the risk we will need to take to get that rate of return. When choosing the vehicle to ride in, we need to realize that the amount of return is directly related to the risk involved in that vehicle. Certain investments have higher returns because they have higher risks. There is contained in the investment a higher probability that the expected return will not occur. If the risks involved in the journey are not worth the expected return, we should probably choose a different vehicle.
To be truly realistic, rates of return should be looked at from their long-term realization. When we are a long term investor, the short term does not really mean any thing to us. In the short term, on a fairly regular basis, markets will fluctuate around the average. These short term variations are aberrations when viewed from the long term outlook. Technical analysts will look at 200 day averages when viewing how a stock is doing because it smooth’s out the variant ups and downs. It helps to give a better outlook on the direction the stock or mutual fund is going.
Knowing that if something is too good to be true, we need a long term yardstick to determine if what we saw in a short term view really holds water in the long term. Investors will often use a short term analysis to make long term decisions. They often run from gloom to doom to euphoria. All discipline disappears and bad things will happen to their investments.
When buying shares of stock the investor who has a long term outlook with their trading systems. They will not try and look at how the stock has done the past three months. They will instead look at what it has done over a longer period of time. Then they will not worry if it has a bad day. Stocks do go up and down. But the long term graph can be pretty impressive.
