An Introduction to Digital Infrared Photography

Jan 22nd, 2010

Pictures which are taken using digital infrared photography are very unusual and usually quite pleasing to look at. They have an unusual tonality which makes them different from other photos which people see on a day to day basis, and this makes them appealing to the eye. Infrared photography has been with us for quite a while but it was very difficult to carry out as it used film. One had to handle the film with extra care and could not evaluate the photos taken until the entire film was used up and the photos printed. Thus infrared photography was unpredictable and often produced disappointing results.

Since digital photography gained popularity, infrared photography became easier to execute. A photographer only requires having several infrared accessories fitted on their digital cameras and they are ready to start shooting photos. The reaction of the camera’s sensor array to infrared light and the filter used by the photographer to see the far end of the visible spectrum will determine the outcome.

Infrared photography employs the use of invisible light. This is made possible by filtering out all the light which is visible. One then remains with the invisible light for use which is the infrared light. To achieve this, one will need to use an infrared filter. There are cameras which have threaded lenses and the only task of the photographer is to purchase the approved thread-size glass in order to mount the filter normally. However, many digital cameras do not have these threaded lenses and will require of the photographer to get a bit creative in order to be able to install the filter.

Pictures taken using infrared portray the subject differently. Leaves appear glowing in a near white color while skin looks like porcelain. Water as well as the sky seems black. Once taken, it is possible to manipulate these photos using de-saturation to achieve the desired effect.
