Driver Alert: How to Stay Awake While Driving

Jan 15th, 2010

One of the most important things you must do while driving is to stay awake.  There are some people that just get sleepy while driving.  There are those who drive for a living and push themselves to the limits, and get tired at a certain point.  It is each drivers' responsibility to stay alert and aware of their surroundings.  There are some products on the market that can help those that have a problem of getting sleepy while driving.  There are drinks as well as well as other aids that can keep a driver alert.  It has been shown that a major cause of accidents involve a driver that has fallen asleep.  So for that long drive, especially if driving alone, you may want to try some different techniques to battle driver fatigue.

Historically coffee has been used to stay alert and awake.  This can work, but when it is empty, then what.  There are those highly caffeinated energy drinks that can do the trick as well.  These are often quick fixes as well as perhaps having some side effects.  Some people get very shaky when drinking caffeine.  Others may have health issues that prevent them from having caffeine.  Those pills with high levels of caffeine should not be used on an on going basis.  You can try some other measures to help stay awake.  Keep your window cracked for fresh air.  You can listen to some zippy music or music to sing to.  If you are traveling with someone else, have them keep you entertained.  If necessary, you need to be willing to pull over and get some rest before continuing on your journey.

In addition to these tips, you can purchase a driver alert device.  These units will make a sound to alert you that you may be drifting off.  They can be attached to your wrist or ear.  They will track any motion that may indict your drowsiness.  These are good devices to use as they will alert you of a problem.  Making use of a driver alert with some of the other tips can help to keep you safe while you are driving.  It is important for you and those other drivers that you are awake, alert and able to be a safe driver.
