Finding a Home Plumbing Specialist

Feb 13th, 2010

I've had the good fortune to be trained professionally in various trades over the course of my life.  I can do pretty much any kind of home remodeling project from building walls, running electrical conduit, laying bricks, and even replacing windows.   However one skill that I sorely lack is the ability to do any type of plumbing.   I have no idea why I've never bothered to learn, but now that I'm a bit older, I'd have to really spend some time to go back and start from scratch.

Of course, another option available to me, as well as to most homeowners is the ability to just outsource the skill set that you don't posses.  For me, a qualified and trained home plumbing specialist is worth his weight in gold.  A plumber does more than just rod out sewer lines and fix leaky faucets.  They are responsible and capable of many complex jobs that really can help improve the value of your home.   For instance a copper repiping job is an often needed service that many old homes with galvanized steel pipes require, however if not done by a skilled specialist...it can be a real nightmare.

Copper repiping costs can vary from several hundred to several thousand dollars.  One thing is for sure though...if you don't use a licensed and trained plumber, the cost will only escalate up to 2 to 3 times what it could be if you started by using the right people for the job in the beginning.

Another complex plumbing job is to install a sump ejector pit.  A friend of mine had one put in recently and that was a very easy project for a plumber to do...but if I had attempted it, there is no way I could have accomplished such a nicely done job as this person did.   For me, hiring someone who specializes in this skill set is something that makes sense.  Whether its a standard home repipe job, or a fully built sewer or septic system, having a plumbing specialist on the job is your best bet for excellent work.
