How Long does Garlic Last?

Garlic is probably one of the most favorite spices of the many. Aside from adding a unique flavor in every meal, garlic can also enhance the appetite of many people. Nowadays, we can already see a lot of food and snacks that comes with garlic flavor. Nuts and chips are even seasoned with garlic powder in order to improve its garlicky taste. Because of this, more and more people are already using garlic in different kinds of dishes. In addition to these, garlic is also known to have great effects in our health such as reducing the cholesterol level in our body and maintaining the blood pressure in normal readings. This made garlic more popular than any other type spices. However, just like any other thing, garlic also has negative effects. One of the most common problems associated in eating garlic is the experience of having bad breath. This is probably the only thing that makes people avoid garlic containing foods. This made us question; how long does garlic last in our mouth, particularly the odor it brings?

It is very true that garlic breath is very hard to prevent whenever we eat something that contains this spice. Nevertheless, there are still some easy and proven ways in order for us to get rid of the after effects of garlic in our breaths. But before discussing these, let first find out why garlic produces such effects. A lot of us may not know this, but our mouth is composed of substances that could promote the growth of bacteria. Once the natural taste of garlic combines with these substances, then we can surely expect that garlic breath will occur. Some of us may also be unaware that we already have garlic breath, but as soon as we open our mouths, the person we are talking to will most probably be the one who will notice the odor. If this situation occurs, then we can already count this experience as one of our embarrassing moments.

This is the reason why we should always know the different ways in order for us to mask or cover the smell of garlic in our breath. One of these easy and effective ways is by chewing fresh parsley. This will release substances that are strong enough to mask the odor. Another option that we could use is to chew on fresh mint or drink hot mint tea. If we don’t have both of these mint products, then we could but mint gums instead. These are also effective in removing the nasty smell of garlic in our breaths. Aside from masking the smell, it is also better for us to do regular teeth brushing in order to permanently remove the odor. This can also be done by doing regular flossing of our teeth. In addition to these, we can also try scraping our tongue using our toothbrush and toothpaste. As we all know, our tongue can also hold the bacteria that can produce the nasty smell of garlic.

If these steps are religiously followed, then we could expect the odor to last for only 2 to 3 hours. If we don’t intervene with the condition, then we could expect the odor or the smell to last for more than one and a half day. Now who wants to have garlic breath for this long?
