Women. Most men would usually identify the opposite sex as complicated and hard to understand. This is indeed true about most of them that even some women would also agree. However, what most men don’t know about women is that they are also experiencing a lot of complicated things or changes in their bodies. This is probably the reason why women also exhibit a lot of mood swings and changes in personality that makes men very confused. One of the most common processes that women encounter in their lives is their menstruation. As we all know, the menstrual cycle is indeed a very complex process. It primarily depends on the effects of the ovaries, hypothalamus and the other glands of a woman. This also involves several hormones, which includes the estrogen, progesterone, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and of course the luteinizing hormone (LH). But what most people ask about these hormones is; how long does LH surge last?
First of all, let us try to discuss a short description about the different processes during a woman’s menstrual cycle. When a cycle begins, the ovaries will tend to release the hormones estrogen and progesterone. However, both of these hormones are inactive at the start of the said cycle. In addition to this, the hypothalamus can also detect the low levels of the hormones, which is why it will then release signal to the pituitary gland in order to release the needed hormones for the maturation of these eggs. If this process progresses, the dominant follicle will now also release. If the egg is fertilized, then this will implant on the lining of the uterus thus causing the menstrual cycle to cease after the baby is delivered. However, if there is no occurrence of any fertilization, the egg will eventually dies thus causing the increased levels of progesterone which causes the uterus lining to slough off. This will then start another cycle.
What are the functions of the LH and FSH? The FSH or Follicle Stimulating Hormone is basically the very first hormone that the pituitary gland will release. Its main role is to help initiate the maturation of at least 10 to 15 eggs. This process lasts for more or less 2 weeks. Once these eggs will mature, the pituitary gland will then release another hormone in the name of the Luteinizing Hormone or LH. This hormone helps the largest or the most mature follicle to go out of the ovary and wait for fertilization to occur. This LH release is now what we call as the LH surge. This surge usually last from 12 to 24 hours and this could be tested using ovulation tests. These tests are very helpful in order for couples to decide upon which time is the best time for them to conceive a baby. This is even similar to a pregnancy test and should be taken at the same time each day (mid afternoon) for ten days. This way, the woman can identify when the surge will take place. After getting a positive result from the ovulation test, intercourse is possible for the next 36 hours.
