How to Start a Group Home

Jan 17th, 2010

Nowadays there are plenty of possibilities for people with mental or developmental disorders but not so long treatment options were not that good. Often individuals who were mentally handicapped were placed in an institution where there weren't any possibilities for them to develop. Luckily there has been a lot of research about this subject and it states that although they are handicapped, they have still possibilities to learn. A group home is a great place where they can learn and develop their abilities and decreases caregiver burden at the same time. If there is no group home in your neighborhood than you might consider opening one yourself. This article will explain how to start a group home for people with mental or developmental dissablities.

Non Profit Organisation

Most group homes will not make any profit and that is why you should establish it as a non profit organization. You will need a 501(c)(3) status and you can get the required papers at the IRA. Before doing this you will also need to create a directors board and write down the bylaws. After you did this you can ask for a tax exempt status.

Funding

Although you can ask for funding at your local authorities you still will need a lot of money in order to establish all this. That is why you have to look for businesses who would like to fund your idea. Write down a concept about how much everything will cost. Don't only consider the house you need to buy or rent, but also about the staff, furniture and living expenses. After you achieved all this you could promote your business and ask people for donations.

Find a House

Probably the most important thing when you want to start a group home is that you will need a house that is easy accessible for wheelchairs. You probably need to do a lot of changes to the house so that is why buying is a better option than renting. You should also do a survey in the neighborhood where you want to buy the house because you will need the support from the neighborhood.

Insurance

Just like any other company you will need insurance for home and organization. You have to do this in order to protect the group home and your organization.

Furniture

The individuals that will move in probably already have a lot of furniture that they can take with them. If that is not enough than you can either ask for donations from larger stores or buy new or second handed furniture. An important issue with the decorating is fire safety. You have to be sure that the group home is safe and that people can be evacuated in the case of fire.

Staff

So now we have a house, inhabitants and furniture, the last thing we need is staff. The amount of staff that you will need will depend on the incapabilities of the inhabitants. If you are not familiar to this you could ask another group home for advice. Have a look how they did it and ask for advice about how much staff your group home will need.

Transport

You will need some kind of transport in order to for transportation. Your inhabitants will need to go to the doctor or to the city and in order to do this you will need some kind of transport. Consider that your transport needs to be wheelchair accessible.

Learn and Develop

The intention of starting a group home was because you want to help the individuals learn and develop their abilities. The best way in doing this is by making a personal development plan for every person. You could again ask for some advice with other group homes.

Community & Interacting

In order to become a success, your group home needs to be interactive. People need to communicate with each other and have possibilities to meet each other. Sometimes your residents will need some encouragements in order to get to know eachother a little better. A good way in doing that is by gameplay.

Evaluate

You want to remain the success that you have build and that is why it is important to regular evaluate. This is a great way to see what is working and what is in need for some change. You also need to keep records of everything that is happening because social security might do some investigating.

This is only a small guide on how to start a group home but we hope that it will help you in order to start your own group home.
