Learning the Violin with Stradivarius Violins
A Stradivarius violin is one that was created by Antonio Stradivari or another member of the Stradivari family. There are fewer than 700 authentic Stradivarius instruments thought to be in existence, and they're widely considered to be near the pinnacle of violin quality.
Antonio Stradivari lived between 1644 and 1737. There's no doubt that his violins are of an exceptional quality, and there is a belief that they're superior to any other violins in the world. This belief is somewhat controversial; there have been blind sound tests performed and scientific acoustic analysis done, with little consensus on whether the violins' sound is actually superior.
The violins were often constructed of willow, spruce and maple. There is conjecture that the beauty of the Stradivarious violin tone is due to Europe being subject to a mini ice age during Stradivari's life – the cooler climate caused the trees to grow much slower than they otherwise would have, and this led to much thicker wood. This theory was tested in 2008 by Dutch scientists who scanned various instruments and found that Stradivarious violins have much thicker (and more consistently dense) wood than it would be possible to create instruments with now.
These instruments are extremely expensive. Anything made between 1680 and 1700 is likely to sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Even more astonishing is that an instrument made between 1700 and 1720 is likely to be worth millions of dollars.
Many young professional players, if they're particularly talented, are sponsored by wealthy supporters of the arts. This means that, although learning the violin is a life-long process, after they're playing at a particular level, they have instruments such as this bought and loaned to them to play. This is clearly a much better use than having the instruments sitting around in a museum or on a millionaire's wall; these instruments were built to make beautiful music.
