How To Winterize Your Leather Goods with a Leather Conditioner
If you live in a country that has a harsh winter climate, care must be taken to protect your leather goods when going out into the cold. Things like leather boots and purses must be treated to deal with the snow, slush and salt that can do major damage to your leather investment pieces. And seeing that boots and handbags are items that speak volumes of personal styles, you want to extend their use for as long as you can. Below are tips in how you can wear leather in the winter and keep it looking fabulous.
Whether you have just purchased a new leather item or are digging out an item from your closet to use for this year’s winter, you need to first clean it of any surface dirt. It is recommended you use the best leather cleaner available commercially and not regular soap and water as this will strip away the leather’s natural oils. Remember that leather is animal skin and soaps can be harsh and that the pH is not balanced for cleaning leather. Before you start cleaning, do a discreet patch testing at one corner of the item. If no dye comes off, you’re good to proceed with the cleaning. Once the surface dirt is off, you should also use a leather conditioner which will keep the leather soft and supple. Again, you should patch test. When all this is done, take your leather boots or purse outside and use a spray protector. Spray the item evenly all over so it is protected from water and salt damage. If you keep this leather cleaning and conditioning routine weekly, your leather product will keep very well over the winter.
Leather is a wonderful material to work with and wear as it is always fashionable. If you treat it well, it will last you a long time to come.
