Medical Hair Restoration for Women

Jan 18th, 2010

I came across an interesting fact that I wanted to share with you. It really points out how uneven our health care still is between female problems and male problems. Did you know that over 40% of the people who seek treatment for hair loss are women? This is true but you never hear about the number of women with hair thinning and balding problems while male pattern baldness is well known. Part of this has been due to societal pressures as women were not supposed to talk about medical problems like this in past generations. They were told to literally “keep it under wraps” by wearing a wig or hat.

Well this is not acceptable any more as more and more females are demanding that medical hair restoration for women be available just like it is for men. There are actually some bright lights at the end of the tunnel which are resulting in women getting the treatments of hair thinning that they need. One baldness treatment area where this is true is hair transplantation. Men have been using hair transplants for years but the procedure was never really applicable for women because the differences in how the medical condition, androgenic alopecia, that causes hair loss manifests itself between the two sexes.

When men suffer from this condition they have thinning hair loss on the top of the head but the hair still grows thick on the sides and back of the scalp. This area at the back of the head can then be used as a donation site for the removal of living hair follicles to be implanted into the balding area on top. Women, on the other hand, do not have areas of thick hair growth in general because they tend to see their hair thinning over the entire scalp instead of in localized patches.

This has meant hair transplants were out of the question but now a new method is allowing for the transplantation of body hair to the thinning areas on a women’s head. The follicular unit extraction method makes it possible for the hair restoration surgeon to remove individual hairs from anywhere on the body and implant them into the thin area. These hairs are more course than scalp hair but they work great as a filler in a thinning area.

If you are seeing your hair thin out then check with a hair restoration clinic about this procedure.
