Modern Snowshoes, Wool & Thermal Socks

Dec 31st, 2009

If you're contemplating getting into snowshoeing for the first time, you're in for a real treat and I highly encourage you to go for it.  It's a great way to get into the outdoors (do you get 'into' the 'outdoors'?..)  Anyway, snowshoeing is really a great way to get a good workout without needing to battle with a bunch of expensive equipment or a steep learning curve.  The same can't really be said for a lot of other winter sports.  If you think about beginners getting started with snow skiing, snow boarding or even cross country skiing, you will probably hear a lot of stories about struggle and frustration at the very least, and possibly some other stories involving a lot of pain and injury.  You're very unlikely to hear any of that surrounding snowshoeing.  At least not with today's modern snowshoes.

The thing is, if you're just getting started, you won't even realize how lucky you really are to use modern snowshoes.  If you had to deal with the old style that you have probably seen strapped or nailed up to the wall of an old mountain cabin or ski lodge, you would be in for a completely different experience.  Back in those days (actually, really not all that long ago!), you were not only dealing with giant wood and leather snowshoes, but the warmest clothes you would be wanting to wear were made of wool.  Wool socks, wool pants, wool sweater and wool hat... once you started sweating you were sure to smell somewhat like a wet dog!  Fortunately, today you get not only the modern, lightweight snowshoes, but thermal socks and underwear made from high tech synthetic fibers that wick moisture away from your body keeping your skin dry and your body warm at a fraction of the weight of 100% wool, and without the wet dog smell!
