The Durability Of Oak Sideboards

Jan 23rd, 2010

The sideboard has been a mainstay of dining room furniture for literally hundreds of years. When the elite class in Europe needed a piece of functional yet classy looking furniture, they had their craftsmen create sideboard furniture. From this start hundreds of years ago, the sideboard lives on today as a piece of storage as well as a piece of history.

Those early pieces were almost exclusively made of oak. The reason for this is the strength of oak, as well as its availability. The phrase "as strong as oak" has true meaning, as there are only one or two other types of wood that can stand up to the strength of oak. The wood's strength comes from the fact that it is a hard wood. A soft wood like pine would not be able to handle the workload nearly as well, and the proof is in the lack of very many antique pine sideboards.

When placed into the hands of a master furniture craftsman, oak can be turned into not just a durable, but an extremely decorative piece of furniture. Oak is hard and strong, but not so hard that it cannot have very detailed finishes worked into the wood. Most sideboard furniture will be around waist height in order to allow it to be used as a food service station, or buffet. The storage will come in the form of either a large open area behind a wood door, or perhaps several small compartments. Sometimes there are glass doors to allow a view into the storage area, in which case there can be photos or family keepsakes put on display.

With modern furniture building came a movement away from hand made furniture and a movement to mass production. The result is there are more shapes and sizes of sideboard furniture available today than ever before. The trade off is in quality. There is not much chance one of the mass produced oak sideboards made today will be in use hundreds of years from now. If you want a piece of furniture that can be the start of a family tradition, you are much better off seeking out a craftsman and having your own hand made piece to pass down through your family.
