Choosing The Right Probe Oven Thermometer

Dec 18th, 2009

When a recipe calls for a 400 degree oven temperature, you won't get the best results if you are unknowingly baking or roasting your item at 350 or 500 degrees. Choosing the right oven thermometer will ensure that your menu item is being cooked at the proper recommended temperature.

There are two types of oven thermometers to consider, depending upon whether you are most concerned about reading the core temperature of an item that is cooking or want to know the surface temperature inside your oven.

A probe oven thermometer measures the temperature inside the core surface of the food you are cooking using a metal probe that is inserted into the item during the cooking time. Several variations of this style oven thermometer include an electric cord oven thermometer probe. This style registers the temperature through an attached cord and projects its findings onto a digital read-out panel located on the oven. A wireless electronic probe is also available which records the temperature via radio signal onto a display panel. A simple thermometer probe is another choice, one that enables you to immediately read-out the recorded temperature displayed on the probe itself.

Surface oven thermometers are designed to read the surface rather than core temperature of the cooking item as it is being cooked inside the oven. An analogue surface oven thermometer features a red dial that stops at the temperature level as indicated on the display much like the face of a clock. An infrared laser oven thermometer records the temperature and displays a digital read-out of the oven's surface temperature without having to insert anything either into the food item or inside the oven.

Whether choosing a probe oven thermometer or a surface temperature thermometer, it's important that the reading be extremely accurate and that the read-out be large and bold enough for you to read accurately. Comfort and easy of use are also important factors. Oven thermometers range in price from $6 to over $60 depending upon the level of sophistication.
