Removing Ink and Lipstick Stains

May 6th, 2010

Ink and lipstick stains are two of the most obvious and embarrassing stains to have on your clothing. While both are traditionally considered very difficult to remove, many home remedies are available that effectively dissolve the stains and make them easy to lift with simple blotting. Removing ink stains is especially time dependent, as the longer the stain is left on the clothing, the more difficult it will be to remove. While removing a lipstick stain will be easier if the lipstick is still fresh, the same method can be used to remove old or new stains.

Ink Stains:
Ink stains are most commonly found on clothing and washable fabrics, and are usually caused by ink pen malfunctions or excessively sloppy art work. A simple remedy has been discovered, however, that effectively removes ink stains from practically any fabric that can be safely laundered in a washing machine.

Start by spraying a thick layer of hair spray directly over the offending stain. The hair spray will begin to break up the ink, and make it easier to remove with the following step. Combine 1 quart of water with ½ teaspoon of dishwashing detergent and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar. Soak the article of clothing in the solution for about 30 minutes, rinse it clean with cold water, and then launder as normal. Allow the garment to air dry, as using the dryer will bake any remaining ink into the fabric. Repeat these steps as often as necessary to completely lighten and remove the ink stain.

Another method is available if the above technique did not remove the ink stain. Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol directly to the ink stain, and then cover it with a clean, dry cloth. Allow to stand until the stain is completely gone. Add additional alcohol as often as necessary to keep the stain moist at all times.

Lipstick Stains:
Lipstick stains are not only difficult to remove, they can be incriminating, even if the wearer of the stained garment has committed no treason. Due to this, many people often go to great lengths to remove lipstick stains, including dry cleaning. However, a much less expensive means of removing exists involving a tasty and sticky household treat: peanut butter.

Begin by spreading a wad of peanut butter directly over the lipstick stain on the clothing. Allow the peanut butter to stand for about 30 minutes, or until it is almost completely dry. Next, transfer the garment into warm, soapy water, with the peanut butter still intact, and hand wash thoroughly. Allow to air dry, and check on the status of the stain. It should be almost completely gone. If it remains, repeat the process, as long as the stain is lightening.
