The Evolution Of Ice Hockey Sticks

Jan 22nd, 2010

If you have played hockey for even just a few years, you have probably noticed that ice hockey sticks have evolved quite drastically over the last few years. With all of the advancements in technology hockey stick manufacturers have refined their product into finely tuned pieces of hockey equipment. Although there are a few different options when it comes to hockey sticks that players have to choose from, the most popular choice by most hockey players are the one piece composite sticks.

A little over a decade ago hockey sticks were quite primitive when compared to what we have today. Wooden sticks were probably the most common stick used by hockey players of the past. Aluminum sticks also were used for a while, but never really took off because they did not have the feel that most hockey players like. Then however, hockey stick manufacturers started testing making hockey shafts with composite materials and it was quite honestly a game changer. Now that composite materials have been refined and they figured out how to make quality one piece composite hockey sticks, hockey players in general are shooting harder and more accurately than ever before.

Although wooden sticks are becoming more obsolete each year, there is still a market for them and there always will be as long as composite ice hockey sticks are as expensive as they are. Many hockey players can not afford to pay almost two hundred dollars for a single hockey stick, so they settle for the wooden stick which is probably not preferred but will do if you are on a tight budget. Hopefully one of these days the companies that manufacture pro stock hockey sticks will find a way to cut their prices which will allow for more hockey players to be able to afford the composite sticks that are so popular. It would be good for the game because hockey as a sport would see the game evolve by seeing improved shots from hockey players of all ages and skill levels.
