Why women experience more depression than men!
The number of people that suffer from depression every single year is staggering. It's also true that women experience more depression than men. What can be even more staggering is the fact that more than half of depression sufferers never get any sort of help for their situation. This sad fact continues to persist despite the fact that depression is a highly treatable disorder that when left untreated can continue to lead to continued mental and physical problems and even potentially death. Without understanding the impact that depression can have on people's lives, sometimes it is very difficult to persuade someone to get help for the disorder.
While treatment options exist and work, people continue to not seek help mostly due to preconceived notions that depression can't really be that bad. Many people hold a stereotyped vision of depression that tells them if they can't get over the feelings, that there must be something wrong with them personally, or they aren't doing something right. This view is common especially among people who have the mistaken belief that occasionally feeling depressed is the same thing as clinical depression. Clinical depression is not a passing feeling, nor is it something that you can get over with just willpower along. Depression is a serious and debilitating illness that requires professional intervention. Without professional treatment, depression can continue to get worse year after year and create or exacerbate any number of physical illnesses. Clinical depression is known to weaken the body's immune system because of the constant stress and may even be a factor in contributing to any number of serious illnesses including heart disease.
Left untreated, over one in ten cases of clinical depression leads to suicide. Getting help for depression is the smart response to treating an illness. With treatment, it is possible to overcome depression for good and get back to living a healthy life. Mental health professionals will help explain everything to the person suffering from depression, including the process of diagnosing depression, creating a treatment plan, and examining different treatment options. The most effective treatments for depression generally consist of counseling or a combination of antidepressants and counseling. Antidepressant therapy alone is not enough as there is no way for the medication to get to the underlying causes for depression and cure them.
